The two i find useful and still do most of the time is to write everything down that i eat and to eat a salad or at least raw veggies with my main meal (i ate salads twice a day when i ate three meals a day).

I was just telling Mac how useful these two things are.  The salads fill me up, but i also notice that if i don't eat them, i get hungry sooner... i guess it's because they are complex carbohydrates and digest slowly, even though they don't have much calories.

I have managed to divorce eating and reading, and that has made a big difference. I love to read and I love to eat, but the best thing of all is a good novel and a good munchie together. I do still eat in front of the TV, but I make up my plate in the kitchen and don't bring extra food into the living room where the TV is.

chewing every bite thoroughly is a method I used about 10 years ago, and it worked. Lost 40 lbs, eating exactly what I wanted, but every bite must be chewed 30 times or "to a fine mush"...first of all, chewing a donut that thoroughly is NASSSSTY so although I could still eat whatever I want, I don't "want" donuts EVER again. (still can't stomach them) Unfortunately, potato chips are AWESOME chewed well!  ;)

Secondly, you really don't eat as much because you are eating so slow, and you naturally take in less calories, and lose weight. I still love to chew some foods to a pulp (raw spinach? oooh, yum!) and this was interesting: Meat isn't that terrific, chewed thoroughly. I would chew a bite and get all the juice out, then spit out the flavorless, dry chunk in a napkin or give it to the dog. blch.

mindful eating. It's a good practice, but it does take self-discipline, and I eventually quit chewing thoroughly and gained it all back.

One trick I learned from bike racers is to never eat after 7PM. I have found this beneficial as I sleep better if a couple hopurs have passed and digestion is well on its way. I make dinner, eat it, and if I am still hungry, then a piece of fruit, but only before 7. The kitchen closes at 7.
